VIDEO: Robert Irwin visits Oregon Coast, documents squabbling sea lions

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — TV personality and wildlife photographer Robert Irwin visited the Oregon Coast last month before he spoke at the University of Oregon on May 24 for the annual Environmental Justice Conference.

Irwin, the son of Eugene native Terri Irwin and the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, shared moments from his trip to Oregon on social media. On May 22, Irwin posted photos of his visit to Yaquina Bay, where he documented Newport's popular sea lion docks.

“These are all sea lions, a huge congregation, and they’ve all come up on this little dock and they’re trying to find their place to rest,” Irwin said in a TikTok video. “It’s a beautiful spot in the sun, it just looks so peaceful. But there’s just constant squabbles.”

Using a familiar sense of humor, Irwin also touched on the amusing nature of Oregon’s sea lions. In the video, Irwin points out a smaller sea lion wedged between two behemoths on the crowded docks.

“There’s this one little, tiny one nestled between these giant sea lions,” he laughed. “I’m not sure what his plan is if he wants to move.”

After serval weeks of back-and-forth communication between KOIN 6 and the Australia Zoo, Irwin kindly agreed to share the footage of his visit to the Oregon Coast. Check out Irwin's trip to Yaquina Bay in the video included at the top of this story.
