Saratoga Springs' Yaddo Gardens opens for the season

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Yaddo, a nonprofit retreat for artists, opens up its Gardens for the public to enjoy each year. The Gardens at Yaddo officially opened for the season on June 10 and will remain open through October 13.

Yaddo was founded around 1900 by Spencer Trask, a financier, and his wife Katrina Trask, a poet. Historical figures such as Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath, and Truman Capote have spent time on the property. The 400-acre estate was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013.

The Gardens' roses begin to bloom in mid-June and are in full bloom from about the third week of June through July. The roses peak again in mid-to-late August. The rock garden is in bloom from mid-June through mid-September.

Admission into the Gardens is free, and you can download a self-guided walking tour on the Yaddo website. Yaddo no longer offers guided tours, however, events scheduled for the summer include Yoga on Sundays, Wine & Roses, and The Nature of Art series.

The Gardens at Yaddo are open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Gardens are closed on Thursday, July 4, Travers Day on Saturday, August 24, and Labor Day on Monday, September 2. Yaddo is located off of Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs.
