Céline Dion Gets Vulnerable in Raw Interview About Stiff-Person Syndrome: ‘[My Sons] Already Lost a Parent'

Céline Dion is setting the record straight, saying that her heart — as well as her body and mind — will go on. And it will go on for the sake of her sons, 23-year-old René-Charles and 13-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy. In a vulnerable and raw interview with People, the legendary singer opened up about her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis and what it has meant for her family.

Dion was diagnosed with SPS — a rare autoimmune and neurological disorder — in August 2022, but the symptoms started in the mid-2000s. These included difficulty walking, difficulty breathing, and painful muscle spasms.

“I barely could walk at one point, and I was missing very much living,” the Grammy winner said. “My kids started to notice. I was like, ‘Okay, they already lost a parent. I don’t want them to be scared.'”

In 2016, Dion’s husband René Angélil tragically died from throat cancer. Images from the widely publicized funeral are painful to look at — with Dion looking both devastated and stoic under a black veil and her twins looking so young (because they were!).

“I let them know, ‘You lost your dad, [but] mom has a condition and it’s different,” she continued. “I’m not going to die. It’s something that I’m going to learn to live with.”

Dion will share even more about her incurable condition and her family in a Prime Video documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, which drops on June 25.

Last month, Dion shared a rare photo with her sons. The family of four was backstage at a Rolling Stones concert and posed with Mick Jagger himself. “…You got us rocking! – Celine xx…” she captioned the post.

Followers couldn’t get over how grown up her twins looked with their facial hair (!!!) and an air of confidence that rivaled that of the musical A-listers they stood with.

“The little twins are such beautiful young men, wow, they’ve grown up so so fast❤️????????????,” one follower said.

They’ve had to grow up fast — losing their dad so young and watching their mother fight this excruciating battle — but it makes us so happy knowing their mother’s words and resilience must have given them some sense of peace. It’s different this time. There isn’t reason to think the global inspiration will die from SPS.
