Grant a ‘big picture’ man
Photographers, photo-journalists, other members of the media and a host of other people whose lives were impacted in some way by Charles Grant thronged St Barnabas’ Anglican Church, spilling over into the churchyard yesterday, to say farewell to the late respected photographer.
Laughter as well as applause echoed through the sanctuary as former colleagues recounted experiences of working with the man “with a nose for news”, whom retired journalist and public relations consultant Al Gilkes described as “a remarkable individual and a remarkable workmate”.
Grant joined the NATION team in the newspaper’s opening stages and, through his initiative and drive, quickly became a familiar name as the news photographer in Barbados who was always on top of breaking news.
Gilkes, retired journalist Timothy Slinger, former Executive Editor of the NATION, Roxanne Brancker, and NATION Associate Editor Maria Bradshaw regaled the congregation with stories of their exploits with Grant, often evoking laughter and applause.
