Players of the Week: Torrens, Severino Lead the Week

After a rough series against the Diamondbacks, the Mets had a bounce-back week sweeping the Nationals in a three-game series and splitting the London series with the Phillies. One name shared by two players shined through those series and earning the title of this week’s Metsmerized players of the week.

The Metsmerized staff came to a consensus that Luis Torrens was the Mets’ position player and hitter of the week and Luis Severino was the pitcher of the week.

Hitter of the Week: Luis Torrens

Torrens had a breakout series against the Nationals in Washington. In Game 1 of the series, he had a double and two RBIs. In Game 3, he was 2-for-4 with a pair of solo homers. During the Mets’ series in London, Torrens had two hits and walk.

Over the course of his last six games, the 28-year-old catcher has slashed .313/.389/.750/1.138 OPS.

Torrens also shined defensively on Sunday by starting a game-winning double play that sent the Mets on to a win over the Phillies to end their weekend before coming back to the United States.

Pitcher of the Week: Luis Severino

Luis Severino has continued to have a very strong season and allowed his momentum to carry into his June 5 start against the Nationals. Severino on Wednesday in Washington pitched eight innings, giving up just one earned run on seven hits and struck out four over the course of 92 pitches (62 for strikes). Severino continued to lower his ERA, taking it down to a 3.25 ERA over the course of 72 innings pitched. He has a WHIP of 1.14 currently.

Severino is currently slated to make his next start on Thursday against the Marlins in New York. He will enter that game with a 4-2 record and leads Mets pitchers in fWAR (1.1).
