In a Reddit post, the unnamed user shared how they managed to remove the dark circles under their eyes by switching up their skincare routine.

The poster revealed that their “under-eye dark circles have almost vanished.”

While the Redditor hadn’t set out to achieve this, they suspected a new addition to their anti-aging routine may be to thank.

“I’m not sure if this is the reason or not but it’s the only thing I changed in my routine recently, vitamin C serum,” they wrote.

The Reddit user broke down the other steps of their routine for their audience.

“I already moisturize after cleansing with an aloe-based foaming gel,” they explained.

“I moisturize with hyaluronic acid, then an oil-free cream from Aldi.”

They followed this routine religiously before recently adding in an Australian product, the $29.50 MooGoo Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Vitamin C Brightening Serum.

The original poster said they noticed results within “a few weeks.”

“I used to have serious purple under my eyes. It’s faded so much,” they said.

They listed the product’s ingredients, which include 95% squalene, 25% ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, and 25% tocopherol.

Dermatologist DiAnne Davis, M.D., spoke to InStyle about the science behind using vitamin C on your under-eye circles.

“Vitamin C decreases the production of melanin by inhibiting tyrosinase, which is an enzyme that results in the production of melanin and pigment in the skin,” she said.

As well as being effective in brightening the skin and reducing pigmentation, it can also help to shield the skin from pollutants in the air.

Reddit users shared their thoughts on the recommendation in the comments section.

Should you apply vitamin C to your skin?

Topical vitamin C has several benefits for the skin including hydrating, and reducing redness, and hyperpigmentation.

According to Healthline, it may also help to promote collagen production and reduce the appearance of sun damage.

Research shows that it is safe for most skin types but may cause irritation in concentrations above 20%.

Experts recommend doing a patch test on a small skin area and waiting 24 hours to see if there are side effects before applying it to your face.

Discontinue topical use of vitamin C if you experience rashes, redness, or hives.

“I have genetic dark circles. Vitamin C has made a HUGE difference. Some days I don’t even use concealer,” wrote one person.

“Vitamin C is one of the best products for darkness under eyes,” agrees another reader.

“I’m 58 [and I’ve] been plagued with dark circles all my life, I tried vitamin C [they’re] not gone but the difference is remarkable.

“Give it time, I’m talking months, but keep at it, it’s worth it.”

“Mine have decreased a lot lately too, and I can’t tell if it’s because of a new product or the fact that I’ve been drinking WAY more water than I ever did,” commented a third Redditor.
