Tropical depression could form in southwest Gulf next week, NHC says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season could see a tropical depression early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Friday, the NHC said an area of low pressure is expected to form in the southwest Gulf of Mexico.

According to the NHC tropical weather discussion, environmental conditions are favorable for further development. Experts estimate that a tropical depression could form in the early or middle part of next week.

As of Friday morning, the area has a 50% chance of development over the next seven days. However, it would then move westward or west-northwestward toward Mexico.

The NHC is also tracking an area of disturbance just off the East Coast, although this area has a low chance of development.

Additionally, the tropical weather outlook said heavy rainfall is expected across Florida through Saturday regardless of development.
