I tested canned rose – the £3 winner is easy to drink and perfect for picnics

A COLD, crisp glass of rose is the perfect tipple when the sun is shining.

It’s not always easy to take a bottle to a festival or picnic though and a lighter, unbreakable can can be easier to keep cold.

Canned alcoholic drinks are nothing new but they are becoming increasingly popular.

Marks and Spencer has recently extended its range of canned cocktails after a 25 per cent increase in sales.

It’s not always cheap though, so you’ll want to make sure you pick the right tipple.

We have the best rose wine’s you can find in a tin. Here is the verdict:

Vinca Organic Pale Rose (187ml)

• £3, vinca.com
• ABV: 12.5%
• 2.3 units

This Provence-style pale rose is made from 100 per cent Syrah grapes in the north-west of Sicily.

But it’s so much more than a picnic treat, it’s light, easy to drink and very grown up. There are hints of strawberry, cranberry and lemon and a slightly spicy finish.

Vinca’s cans are plastic-free, recyclable and have a special organic lining so the wine never touches the aluminium or affects the flavour.

There’s roughly one quarter of a bottle in this tin.

19 Crimes Rose (187ml)

• £2.50, tesco.com
• ABV: 10.5%
• 2 units

A very colourful pink, this can is filled with lively strawberry, raspberry and red cherry flavours. 

Delicate floral notes and rose petal aromas give it a balanced and fresh flavour. It’s acidic and dry in flavour. 

While it wasn’t my favourite, these cans are reasonably priced compared to many of the tins so it’s not a bad option for a summer’s picnic for festival.

The Uncommon Rose Wine Spritzer (250ml)

• £4.55, ocado.com
• ABV: 5.5 per cent
• 1.3 units

Not a cheap tipple sadly at £4.55 a can. It would be cheaper to buy a bottle and make a spritzer yourself.

However, it is delicious with notes of red fruit and botanicals of mint and jasmine.

Incredibly refreshing, moreish and a triumph that really hits the mark on a summer day.

For the health-conscious or those who watch their booze intake, worth noting it’s only 1.3 units and 83 calories per can. But at nearly £5 a can, I’ve had to rate it lower than I’d have liked.

M&S Zinfandel Rose (250ml)

• £3.75, ocado.com
• ABV: 9.4%
• 2.4 units

Launched in 2020, this wine from M&S is juicy and light with a refreshing finish. It has plenty of raspberry and melon flavours, but I found it very sweet, verging on sickly.

I wanted to like it more than I did as I’m usually a big fan of M&S products. However, I prefer dry wines so this one is not for me.

Pret-a-Porter Rose Mirabeau (250ml)

• £3.50, sainsburys.co.uk
• ABV: 12.5%
• 3.13 units

A deliciously dry rose, with a nice balance of watermelon and strawberry and a slight bite of grapefruit on the tongue.

It’s a slim can, which is very portable and perfect for outdoor adventures. It’s a good size, equivalent to a large glass, with a really attractive light-pink hue.

The aroma of citrus and fresh apricots hits you as you open the can. It’s quite boozy and is over three units in a single can so you might need to take it easy. But I loved it.

Canvino Rose (200ml)

• £2.50, tesco.com
• ABV: 10/5%
• 2.1 units

This had a lovely fizz as you popped open the can. I loved the branding and design and considering the price, it felt like a much more premium product.

The wine itself was delicious too, with fruity notes and medium-dry.

It’s made in the Italian region of Lombardy with the Canvino grapes being sourced from a family- owned vineyard that has been making wine for a century.

I thought it was excellent value for money.

Most Wanted Pinot Grigio Pink Fizz (200ml)

• £2.50, groceries.asda.com
• ABV: 11%
• 2.2 units

Very dark in colour, it looks more orange than pink and it has quite a sour taste.

Made using pinot grapes in Hungary, it’s quite sugary, full bodied with a raspberry finish.

But it reminded me more of a cherry-flavoured soft drink than wine. There are better sparkling and rose wines out there on offer. Least – rather than most wanted for me.
