T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8: Scenarios, Complete Schedule, Date, Timings, Venues

West Indies will host the Super 8 stage and the knockouts of T20 World Cup 2024.

New Delhi: The Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 is slowly shaping up after the match between co-hosts USA and Ireland was abandoned due to torrential rains in Florida. The result not only put minnows USA along with the big boys in the second round of the T20 World Cup 2024, but also knocked Pakistan out from the group stage in Group A. On the other hand, another big shot New Zealand too have been eliminated from the group stage, after losing against Afghanistan and West Indies.

This is the first time in the T20 World Cup that New Zealand failed to progress to the second round. The story is similar for Pakistan too. In fact, baring 2014 and 2016, Pakistan have played in the semifinals of all previous editions. Notably, the USA’s qualification to Super 8 also meant that have cemented a spot in the 2026 edition of the tournament to be held jointly in India and Sri Lanka.

T20 World Cup 2024 Group-Wise Qualification Scenario

Group A: India and USA have qualified for the Super 8 stage while Pakistan, Ireland and Canada stand eliminated.

Group B: Australia are the only team from Group B to have officially qualified for the Super 8 stage while Oman and Namibia have taken the exit route. Scotland and England fight the remaining spot. Scotland (with five points from three games) need a win against Australia to advance. In case Scotland lose and England (three points from three games) win against Namibia, the defending champions will prevail due to a batter net run rate.

Group C: Afghanistan and West Indies have cemented their spots in Super 8 from Group C. New Zealand, Uganda and Papua New Guinea have been eliminated.

Group D: With four wins from same number of games, South Africa have qualified for the Super 8 while Nepal and Sri Lanka have officially been eliminated. Both Bangladesh and Netherlands have a chance to grab the remaining spot. While Bangladesh (four points from three games) need just a win against Nepal. On the other hand, the Dutchmen need a big win against Sri Lanka to qualify for Super 8, provided Bangladesh lose by a big margin.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will enter the Super 8. However, unlike the previous seasons, the ICC has introduced a seeding system this time in the Super 8.

How Do Seedings Work In Super 8?

From the four groups A, B, C and D, the top two teams based on rankings are seeded for the Super 8 stage, which will comprise of two pools of four.

Group A: India are seeded A1 and Pakistan A2

Group B: England are seeded B1 and Australia B2

Group C: New Zealand are seeded C1 and West Indies C2

Group D: South Africa are seeded D1 and Sri Lanka D2

This means, if any of the above teams progress, they will assume their seeded position in the Super 8, regardless if they finish first or second in the Group Stage. Example: West Indies will be C2 in the Super 8 fixture even if they win Group C. Non-seeded teams will assume the position of the seeded team that failed to qualify.

How Do Super 8 Groups Look Like?

India, Australia, Afghanistan and either Bangladesh or Netherlands will combine to make Group 1 in Super 8. In Group 2, USA are placed alongside West Indies, South Africa and either Scotland or England. All the matches in Super 8 will be played in different venues in West Indies. The top two teams from both the groups will advance to the semifinals. The Super Eight stage commences in Antigua on June 19.
