Mujahid announces Monday as first day of Eid al-Adha in Afghanistan

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban administration, announced that Sunday is the Day of Arafah, and Monday coincides with the first day of Eid al-Adha.

Mr. Mujahid, in a statement, said that the announcement of the days of Arafah and Eid al-Adha is based on “religious decree.”

The Taliban officials has announced Monday as the first day of Eid al-Adha while the Hajj ceremony began on Friday in Mecca, and the Arafah ceremony is being held today, Saturday, June 15, in Mecca with the presence of 1.5 million Muslims, including senior Taliban officials.

The eive of Eid days come amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned on Friday on the social media platform X that over 12 million people in Afghanistan do not know where their next meal will come from during Eid.

The WFP urged for immediate aid support to address this severe food insecurity.

The WFP’s warning highlights the critical need for international aid and support as millions of Afghans face hunger and malnutrition.

The organization called on the global community to step up and provide the necessary resources to help alleviate the suffering and ensure that families in Afghanistan can celebrate Eid with some semblance of hope and dignity.
