I’m a high-functioning alcoholic, now in recovery – should I open up to my co-workers?

APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady answers your careers questions.

Here she gives advice to a reader who is currently in recovery for alcoholism and wondering if they should disclose this to their boss and team.

Karren Brady, Baroness Brady, CBE is a British business executive and television personality

Q. I’m in my late-30s, with a successful career in PR.

I’m also a high-functioning alcoholic, something I’ve only recently felt able to tackle.

No one in my team knows, though some likely have suspicions, as while I’ve never been blackout drunk in front of them, there have been work events where I’ve gone too far.

I’m finding it a big burden to carry, and as I’m now dealing with it by going to therapy and Alcoholics Anonymous, being transparent with my colleagues could be beneficial to me and my team, but I’m concerned it’s not professional.

Do you have any advice?

Anonymous, by email

A. It takes courage to confront challenges like this, and I commend you for taking steps to overcome your issues through therapy and AA.

Opening up about such personal struggles at work can be a sensitive decision.

Consider the culture and environment of your workplace before deciding to disclose this information.

While transparency can foster trust and understanding, it’s essential to keep a professional boundary.

Reflect on why you feel sharing this could be beneficial.

Are you seeking support from colleagues?

Hoping to raise awareness and reduce stigma?

Understanding your motivations can guide your approach and make sure you are sharing your struggles for the right reasons at the right time.

You may decide to reveal your challenges in a private setting with a small group you trust, like your manager.

Lean on your therapy sessions and AA meetings for ongoing guidance.

Remember, the decision to disclose personal information at work is yours, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, so trust your instincts and prioritise your wellbeing.
