Juneteenth Ohio event continues at Genoa Park

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – An event celebrating freedom returned to Columbus this weekend.

Saturday was day one of the Juneteenth Ohio event at Genoa Park, with attendees listening to music, eating food, getting health screenings, and shopping.

Organizers said the event is all about bringing people together.

Juneteenth marks the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, with the last of the enslaved people in America being declared free. Event organizer said the holiday is all about moving forward.

Organizers said they look forward to putting on the celebration every year and want it to be a place where people feel safe.

“We’ve done a good job at that, so for the most part, they are relaxed,” organizer Mustafaa Shabazz said. “They are spending dollars. They’re looking for great entertainment. They are basically celebrating freedom the way it’s supposed to be celebrated in 2024.”

The event continues Sunday from noon until 10 p.m.
