Zahir Aghbar, Afghanistan’s ambassador, announced on Tuesday that Tajikistan will grant 50 scholarships to Afghan students, focusing particularly on girls.

He stated on Sunday, June 15th, through a post on his social media platform X that concessions would be made for girls.

According to Afghanistan’s ambassador, the embassy will conduct exams to identify eligible scholarship candidates.

Mr. Aghbar has urged interested students and scholars to submit necessary documents to the educational attaché of the Afghan embassy in Tajikistan by July 25th.

In his message, Mr. Aghbar emphasized that “in conditions where the gates of education are still closed to our girls and the quality of education is at its lowest, these scholarships are a hope to present a new generation of professionals to serve society.”

It has not yet been specified which university or academic level these scholarships will cover.

Previously, several countries, including Germany, Italy, and Iran, provided educational scholarships for thousands of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Amid oppressive policies in Afghanistan banning girls from education beyond sixth grade, Tajikistan’s offer of 50 scholarships highlights regional efforts to support educational opportunities for Afghan students.

The initiative comes as girls in Afghanistan have faced over 1,000 days without access to schools, underscoring the critical need for international support and initiatives like Tajikistan’s scholarship program.
