Kieran Trippier has revealed that Son Heung-min was one of the players who was asked to do extra work after training by Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff as they wanted the South Korean to lose weight.

Heung-min Son’s start to life at Tottenham

Son has been incredibly consistent for Tottenham over the best part of the last decade, regularly registering over 20 goal contributions season in, and season out.

The Tottenham captain’s record in the Premier League is quite astounding, with the forward having scored 120 times and provided 62 assists in 303 matches in the English top flight (Transfermarkt).

The 31-year-old has also breached the top five in Spurs’ all-time goalscoring charts and is likely to end up a few places higher if he continues at the club for a couple of more years.

The forward already has a legendary status at Tottenham and is widely viewed as one of the best attackers in the Premier League.

However, Son did not have the easiest of starts to life at Spurs when he arrived at White Hart Lane in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen as he was not a regular in the starting eleven during his first season at the club.

Heung-min Son was asked to lose weight at Spurs

Trippier has now spoken about how former Tottenham assistant coach Jesus Perez put him through extra fitness sessions to lose weight, revealing that Son was also subject to the same treatment, which left Gary Neville quite shocked.

The Newcastle star told The Overlap: “I was in the chamber for four or five months. Jesus put me in there after every session for 35/40 minutes doing fat-burning stuff. We were on the treadmill, on the rower.”

“Who’s we?” Neville asked. “I may as well throw them under the bus. There was me, Toby, Sonny was in there a couple of times”, Trippier said.

Neville then retorted: “What? Son who plays football for Tottenham now? There’s nothing on him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The extra fitness work that Perez and Pochettino made Son do has certainly benefited the South Korean, who remains one of the hardest-working forwards in the Premier League despite his superstar status.
