Minor League Recap for Saturday and Sunday: Captains Clinch Playoff Berth

Minor League Recaps for June 15th and 16th, 2024

The Lake County Captains became the first half champions of the Midwest League with their win on Saturday night in what was, otherwise, a disappointing weekend for Guardians’ affiliates.

Saturday: Iowa Cubs 3, Columbus Clippers 2

Gavin Williams’ velocity looked good but his command wasn’t quite there enough to put hitters away and his pitch count in an inning forced him to complete his work in the pen after 1.2 innings and allowing one run. Jose Tena’s single drove in Bryan Lavastida after he had doubled and a groundout from Tena drove in Christian Cairo after a triple later on.

Sunday: Iowa Cubs 11, Columbus Clippers 6

Tena and Angel Martinez both had four hits, including a home run for Tena and a double for Martinez. Juan Brito had a walk and a single. Joey Cantillo went three scoreless with three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Andrew Walters finally had a decent outing but Peter Strzelecki got absolutely destroyed in the ninth inning.

Interestingly, we haven’t seen Jhonkensy Noel in three games. Hmm...

Saturday: Hartford Yard Goats 2, Akron Rubber Ducks 1

I’ll tell you what, folks, I’m a believer in Tommy Mace, with his groundball rate, but he also had seven strikeouts in six innings in this game, allowing only one run. The Rubber Ducks offense was mostly MIA, however, with only a Joe Lampe single driving in Kahlil Watson after one of his three walks on the day.

Sunday: Hartford Yard Goats 1, Akron Rubber Ducks 0

The Rubber Ducks’ pitching dominance and offensive futility trends continued. C.J. Kayfus got a single and a walk and Dayan Frias had two singles. Jaime Arias threw six innings and allowed one run, striking out four. Ross Carver has been solid in relief and threw a scoreless ninth.

Saturday: Lake County Captains 2, Fort Wayne TinCaps 1

Trenton Denholm had GREAT stuff and struck out eight in eight one-run innings. In the bottom of the tenth, Guy Lipscomb grounded out to score Jonah Advincula. I was here! But our four-month old needed to go home in the fifth. I was impressed by the quality of Ingle’s at-bats and it’s easy to see why Alex Mooney has made some noise. He swings HARD. This walkoff launched a celebration in Eastlake as the Captains clinched a playoff berth by winning the first half championship of the Midwest League. Good! Time to promote Austin Peterson and Lipscomb, I guess!

Sunday: Fort Wayne Tin Caps 7, Lake County Captains 5

Angel Genao had two hits including a double, and Peterson threw six innings, striking out five, giving up two unearned runs and not giving up a walk. A rough day in relief for Jake Miller helped the game slip away from the Captains.

Saturday: Lynchburg Hillcats 7, Augusta Green Jackets 6

Wuilfredo Antunez hit a double and Esteban Gonzalez got two singles. Christian Knapczyk had two hits and three RBI.

Sunday: Augusta Green Jackets 7, Lynchburg Hillcats 6

Ralphy Velazquez had two hits and Jaison Chourio had a double.

Summer/Complex League Scores:

Saturday: ACL Guardians 10, D-Backs 8

DSL Padres Gold 7, Cle Mendoza 6

DSL Cle Goryl 15, Brewers2 3
