Topeka Fire Department Citizens Academy coming up

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Fall 2024 Citizens Academy, a program to teach about fire prevention and safety, is starting in a couple of months.

The Topeka Fire Department (TFD) is now taking applications for the academy that starts Thursday, Aug. 1 and runs through Sept. 5. The academy hosts classes on Thursday evenings covering various fire safety and prevention topics.

"The academy aims to educate citizens about fire safety and emergency services while fostering strong community relationships," the Topeka Fire Department wrote in a press release. "The experience is designed to be educational, enjoyable, and occasionally challenging."

Attendants will learn about firefighting tools and training, according to the TFD. The academy will also see presentations from the TFD’s Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Team, Technical Rescue Team, Public Education Officer, Fire Marshal and Honor Guard and more.
