Felon who escaped from Rancho Cucamonga jail arrested in Los Angeles

He escaped Sunday afternoon from the recreation yard though authorities did not release information on how he managed to do it.

A Riverside County felon who escaped from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga over the weekend was arrested in Los Angeles on Monday, June 17, authorities said.

Deshaun Maurice Stamps, 29, was charged last November with attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a peace officer, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. He escaped Sunday afternoon from the recreation yard though authorities did not release information on how he managed to do it.

Stamps was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department on Monday and was in the process of being transferred back into the custody of sheriff’s officials.

Stamps was ordered last week by a judge to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after the judge expressed doubt about Stamps’ mental competency to stand trial, court records show.  He was scheduled to return to court on Aug. 14 for a hearing of the results of the evaluation.
