Alasdair Gold plays down speculation linking Spurs to Juventus player

Despite reports suggesting Tottenham Hotspur are trying to hijack a move for Weston McKennie from under Aston Villa’s noses, Alasdair Gold has revealed he has heard no such thing.

By all accounts, Spurs are in the market for a new central midfielder this summer, as Ange Postecoglou looks to upgrade his options in the middle of the park.

It is widely expected that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, for one, will be leaving the club in the upcoming transfer window, leaving a gap to fill in his position (The Daily Star, relayed by Football.London).

Until now, Conor Gallagher has been the main target linked with the Lilywhites, but the England international appears keen to stay with Chelsea instead (Fabrizio Romano).

Are Spurs signing Weston McKennie?

It’s hardly surprising, then, that other names are entering the mix. Today, it is the turn of Weston McKennie, with the Juventus man said to be the subject of a £15m offer from Spurs that has been accepted (Football Insider).

The midfielder had been in line to join Aston Villa this summer, as part of the deal taking Douglas Luiz to Juventus, but talks appear to have stalled there.

However, Alasdair Gold has commented on the matter, and insists these rumours may be baseless.

When asked if he had heard anything on the McKennie situation, Gold tweeted: “It is my day off, but no interest from Spurs in Weston McKennie I’m told.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m sorry, but I think we can and should do better than Weston McKennie. We need an elite number 6 to truly transform the team, and he just isn’t that player.

It will be really frustrating if Spurs go for the cheap option simply because it’s there, rather than identifying the right option that can take us to the next level. Hopefully Gold is right on this one.
