Gov. Landry signs LA GATOR scholarship program into law

A bill that allows Louisiana parents to use tax dollars to pay to send their kids to a school of their choice is being signed into law today.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A bill that allows Louisiana parents to use tax dollars to pay to send their kids to a school of their choice was signed into law today.

Gov. Jeff Landry signed the LA Gator Scholarship Program into law, which begins the phase-in of Education Scholarship Accounts. The signing, which included over a dozen education bills, was held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School in Lafayette.

The signing, which took place before a crowd of educators and legislators, with students in the background, includes a bill that removes excessive mandates on educators, and also bills that deal with students based on their birth sexual orientation. The final bill signed, the LA GATOR scholarships, provides money for parents to send their children to a school outside of public school, including private school.

The Governor also signed a bill to allow school boards to accept volunteer chaplains into schools.
