Imelda Staunton is poised to complete ‘The Crown’ Emmy hattrick

“The Crown” has been a consistent Emmy contender since its first season debuted on Netflix in 2016. Last year, its sixth season premiered on the streaming service, bringing the drama to a conclusion once and for all. We expect this season to be a big hit with Emmy voters once more and several stars could benefit from that attention, including Queen Elizabeth actress Imelda Staunton.

Staunton took over the role from Olivia Colman, who in turn inherited the character from Claire Foy. Staunton joined the show in season five and, in season six, she provided her best performance as Queen Elizabeth yet. This season takes place between 1997 and 2005 and depicts the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), the premiership of Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) as Prime Minister, and the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams). Critics agree, Staunton is excellent again as she leads the line as Queen Elizabeth.

Shannon Connellan (Mashable) opined: “Imelda Staunton is superb as Queen Elizabeth II, again… The final episodes of Peter Morgan’s Netflix series benefit from superb performances from Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville… With an impeccable Staunton at the slow-going helm, the final episodes of ‘The Crown’ grapple with the ongoing role of the Royal Family and the Queen herself, in a time when the institution continues to be publicly scrutinised and exposed. But more than that, the Queen asks these questions of herself, in a conversation entirely fabricated but intriguing to watch.”

Andrew Murray (The Upcoming) proclaimed: “As the series approaches its close, the focus shifts from the family drama to one of reflection of the late Elizabeth II’s (who’s once again played flawlessly by Imelda Staunton) life and reign that is frequently moving and heartfelt, particularly when it comes to one scene involving the monarch and her sister.”

William Tucker (But Why Tho?) explained: “At the heart is Staunton, who plays Queen Elizabeth. Staunton really steps into the role and resonates a power that hadn’t really been demonstrated before these last 6 episodes. The strength and stoney demeanor that the Queen can conjure is fantastic, instantly professional as the head of state. She will push back against a Prime Minister or an unruly family member with an unwavering force. And yet, that rigid shell is given more of a test than perhaps ever before. She becomes more alone, with members of her family and dear friends dwindling. That ever-growing isolation can turn a Queen into a vulnerable old woman at the head of a dysfunctional family of which she is the only one who seems rock steady.”

As a result, we are predicting that Staunton will be nominated for Best Drama Actress alongside Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Anna Sawai (“Shōgun”), Emma Stone (“The Curse”), Carrie Coon (“The Gilded Age”), and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”).

Staunton is an easy prediction to make here, particularly as Emmy voters love “The Crown.” So far, the show has won a whopping 21 Emmys. Being involved in a show this beloved will always help your chances no matter what. But let’s dig a little deeper into Emmy voters’ love for this show. They specifically adore the performances, having awarded “The Crown” 18 nominations in total for its various actors’ roles. That is an incredible number. Season one garnered two bids, season two reaped four nominations, season three received two bids, season four was greeted with a huge nine nominations, and season five picked up one citation for acting.

Currently, we think that “The Crown” season six will be nominated for Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actress for Staunton, Best Drama Actor for West, Best Drama Supporting Actress for Debicki and Manville, Best Drama Supporting Actor for Jonathan Pryce and Khalid Abdalla, and Best Drama Guest Actress for Foy. That’s eight major Emmy nominations we think it will receive, so Staunton seems like a natural fit for another nomination here.

Every season of “The Crown” bar season five has garnered at least one nomination for an actress playing Queen Elizabeth. Foy was nominated for Best Drama Actress in 2017 and 2018, winning in 2018, while Colman picked up bids in 2020 and 2021, winning in 2021. And Foy was nominated for Drama Guest Actress in 2021. They clearly admire actresses who take on the daunting task of portraying Queen Elizabeth, so Staunton could become the latest performer nominated for depicting this monarch.

And “The Crown” has five nominations for Best Drama Actress as Emma Corrin was cited in 2021 for portraying Princess Diana. In fact, since “The Crown” premiered, only “Killing Eve,” with seven bids, has earned more nominations in this category. Emmy voters adore this show in this category.

This would be Staunton’s second Emmy nomination after she picked up a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress bid in 2013 for “The Girl.”
