A family out for a morning walk in Texas jumped into action when they found an abandoned newborn girl wrapped in a towel on the ground, according to recent reports.

On June 15, Daniela Fedele was out for a walk with her husband and 3-year-old daughter in Harris County, Texas, when they noticed a towel on the ground.

Fedele told local news outlet KHOU 11 that she “noticed two little feet moving” under the towel. She realized it was a baby and immediately called out to her husband, who was just behind her, and they called 911.

According to The New York Post, the infant “was still attached to the umbilical cord” when the couple found her. Temperatures that day were set to rise to 95 degrees.

“Once my husband went ahead and picked up the baby, he found the nearest, like, tree right there, the house down the street. He found a little shade,” Fedele said, according to KHOU 11.

The family waited with the infant until authorities arrived and transported her to a local hospital. The newborn now “remains in good condition” at the hospital, according to an X post by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Police are seeking information about the suspect who abandoned the infant.

Security camera footage recorded the moment when the infant was abandoned on the walking bridge on the trail, according to The New York Post: “Grainy surveillance footage from afar shows a man slowly walking up to the bridge and placing down the helpless newborn — initially walking back slowly before breaking into a sprint.”

Gonzalez posted on X that the police “are seeking info about a young Hispanic or White male, slim, fair complexion with black hair, that was holding the infant wrapped in a towel. He was wearing a black shirt, possibly gray pants.”

Fedele told KHOU 11 that she was shocked to discover the abandoned infant.

“This image has been going on through my head so many times, and this is, like, how can you do that? I was shocked, I was mad, I was upset,” Fedele said, later adding, “You can drop [the baby] off at a fire station, a police station, a hospital. I don’t know … but don’t leave the baby.”

Texas has a Safe Haven law, also known as the Baby Moses Law, that allows for parents in crisis to surrender an unharmed newborn child under 60 days old at any firehouse, police station, hospital, or EMS station in the state, without fear of prosecution.

According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the parent must surrender the child to an employee and inform the employee of the intention to leave the child at the Safe Haven location. The parent also may be asked to provide medical history to ensure the child receives proper care.
