The iconic actor died in Miami, Florida, from an undisclosed illness, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sutherland was the father of Emmy Award-winning actor Kiefer Sutherland and veteran CAA Media Finance executive Roeg Sutherland.

Kiefer, 57, mourned his father’s death and remembered him as “one of the most important actors” of all time.

“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly.

“He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Born on July 17, 1935, Sutherland shot to fame in 1967 in the war movie classic, The Dirty Dozen.

He enjoyed a long career that saw him star in big Hollywood blockbusters and high-profile TV shows.

The actor was married three times over his life.

His first wife was Lois Hardwick from 1959-1966, then he married Shirley Douglas from 1966-1970.

Sutherland and Shirley had twins, Kiefer and his sister Rachel.

At the time of his death, he was married to Francine Racette – the pair wed in 1972.

The couple had three sons, Rossif, Angus, and Roeg.
