A 21-year-old man was pronounced dead after being pulled from a reservoir in Oxford where he was reportedly swimming on Thursday.

A 21-year-old man has died after being pulled from a reservoir in Oxford on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Police and firefighters responded to reports of a swimmer who had gone underwater and did not resurface at the Seymour Reservoir No. 2, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The man was recovered by a dive team but was unconscious and unresponsive. He was declared dead at the scene “following a period of CPR,” DEEP said in a statement.

The department said the reservoir is not a designated swimming area.

The death is under investigation by Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.
