'Suspicious death' investigation results in arrest of murder suspect
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was arrested Thursday morning and is accused of murder in a "suspicious death" investigation in Salem from earlier this month, authorities announced.
On Thursday morning, the Salem Police Department arrested 38-year-old Atilano Davalos III. Officials said in a release that the Salem Police Department SWAT Team assisted detectives with serving a warrant in the 2900 Block of Mendocino Drive Northeast.
Davalos III was booked into Marion County Jail and faces second-degree murder charges.
On June 7, police said they opened an investigation into a "suspicious death" of a 28-year-old woman who was found dead in the middle of the road on May 23.
Carla Fernanda Vasquez was spotted “lying in the roadway” after surveillance footage showed a car traveling eastbound near 111 Rural Avenue SE, where she was found just before 2 a.m., officials said. Paramedics later arrived and declared her dead.
