DOTD talks navigating Highway 90 during hurricane evacuation

Highway 90 is one of the main routes in Louisiana that many travelers take when evacuating the area, with a lot of construction going on.

(KLFY) --- Evacuation preparedness is a major priority with hurricane season upon us. Highway 90 is one of the main routes in Louisiana that many travelers take when evacuating the area, with a lot of construction going on. Deidra Druilhet with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said it is very important to prepare yourself for any scenario.

"Oftentimes there is going to be construction possibly going on a particular route that you may be utilizing for the evacuation process," Druilhet said. "So that's why we encourage people to get a game plan, know which routes you are going to take, leave as early as possible. If need be, go north."

Druilhet said people should utilize the state resources they have available with MyDOTD For road updates and the 511 system, which displays open routes and closed routes for any scenario.

"This [511 system] is actually a good system to utilize in terms of finding out which routes are open and which ones still may be impacted by any type of weather-related debris," she said.

Druilhet said the construction equipment along Highway 90 will remain where it is even during evacuation orders, so it is important to navigate with caution.

"Abide by the speed limit and try not to tailgate as much as possible. Of course, don't drive distracted and don't drive under the influence and give yourself enough time to get where you need to go," said Druilhet. "That's why we're encouraging people to if you can evacuate sooner, go ahead and do so."

If you have issues coming up with an evacuation plan, here's a resource to help.
