‘A mesh dress from Shein is not classy, it looks cheap’ wedding guest slated for high slit, sheer dress
A WOMAN has been criticised online over her clothing options for a wedding she will be attending.
Taking to Reddit, a user under the name I’m a Doctor If I Say I Am asked for opinion‘s over a Shien dress and the responses were mixed.
The post was shared in the Wedding Attire Approval subreddit.
It was titled ‘Does this work for an October wedding in the Finger Lakes?’
She penned: “No real dress code, but closer to cocktail.
“I want something that’s breathable in case it’s still warm in October, but also something classy.
“I would also love recommendations for something similar, but plus size and better quality than Shein. Thanks.”
The responses flooded in. One person said: “A mesh dress from shein is not classy. It looks cheap.”
Another wrote: “Mesh is definitely not classy… keep looking.”
A third said: “I think it’s a bit country casual. I like Eloquii for my plus size cocktail dresses.”
A fourth commented: “It’s cute but my fear is it won’t be a good option if it’s cold.
“It can get really chilly up there. I just looked and the high is 62 and low is 42.
“When it gets dark at 6PM, you’re probably going to regret this choice.
“Also, this reads more spring/summer than fall. Personally, I’d go with something else.”
However, others were more supportive. Someone penned: “I think this works.
“I’d wear more elegant jewelry and skip the cowboy hat, but I do like the shoes they have on the model.”
A second wrote: “I hands down adore this dress.”
On Shien, the dress’ usual price is £16.49 but is down to £14.99.
The floor-length black mesh dress is covered in flowers with a round neckline and a slit down one side.
This wouldn’t be the first time wardrobe choices for wedding guests has caused a stir on social media.
A woman shared a TikTok about her mum, who wore not only white but a similar style of dress to her on her big day.
Erin Gina Hammond shared the expirence in a video and wrote in the caption: “She originally wanted to wear green but we both fell in love with this white dress!”
People were quick to flock to the comments to share their distate for the situation, even though the bride didn’t seem to mind.

Another said: “Who’s getting married?”
A third penned: “Can honestly say she looks beautiful but if my mum rocks up to my wedding next week in Greece in white she’s getting chucked in the pool head first.”

I tend to consider myself pretty low maintenance from a fashion and beauty point of view.

Professional hair and makeup is booked for 8am, I’ve gone all out on my wedding dress, got designer shoes and even bought a second dress for the evening do.
So when I think about someone wearing a white gown to my big day, yeah I think I’d be pretty mad.
The idea behind not wearing a white dress goes back to not wanting to ‘upstage the bride’.
Which, to be fair, is unlikely. Not only has she possibly spent a small fortune on her look for the day, she’s also one of the only two people present who knows (and hopefully likes) all the guests.
So the main risk you’re taking is just making yourself look quite silly – and getting gossiped about by total strangers.
A wedding guest I met in October 2022 still sticks out in my mind. I still don’t know what was worse – the fact she was so drunk she was crashing into people on the dance floor, or her decision to wear a white dress, which was arguably marginally improved by the glass of red wine she’d drunkenly tipped down herself.
I know weddings are expensive for everyone and it’s fair enough if you don’t want to buy a whole new outfit – I’m all for re-using what’s already in your wardrobe.
Just avoid the white dress for the bride’s sake – and your own.
