National media say Spurs player just put in the ‘ultimate’ performance on a big stage
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg put in a top performance for Denmark as they held England to a 1-1 draw in the group stages of Euro 2024, and his national press have been waxing lyrical about his latest display.
England vs Denmark at the European Championships
England and Denmark came head to head in the second match of the group stages and shared a point each to leave Group C in an uncertain state heading into the final group game next week.
The Three Lions took the lead thanks to former Spurs man, Harry Kane, on 18 minutes. But, England failed to make their early dominance count, and allowed the Vikings back into the game.
Reported Spurs target, Morten Hjulmand levelled the scores on 34 minutes with a fine long-distance effort, and neither side could make a breakthrough in the second half.
The point leaves England at the top of the group with four points, while Denmark and Slovenia both have two points. Serbia are bottom of the pile with one point, meaning any of the four teams could qualify from the group next week.
Hojbjerg shines in Euro 2024 draw
Hojbjerg was instrumental to Denmark’s efforts on the night, battling well in the middle of the park, driving his team forward, and even testing Jordan Pickford in the England goal on occasion.
The display earned him the Man of the Match award and rave reviews from the Danish press. Ekstrabladet gave him a 9 out of 10 rating and said: “Bellingham who? Hojbjerg is ultimate in his interventions for good and bad, but well, that was very good.
“A warrior of a player that would make a Viking envious. The midfielder was hugely involved with and without the ball, and he is the heart and energy that this national team so badly needs.”
Meanwhile, DR Sport wrote: “Hojbjerg… has not been used very much from the start of this season at Tottenham. It can seem decidedly bizarre when you see him for Denmark in such a match against England.
“The midfielder was here, there and at both ends of the pitch with important actions and even dangerous long shots in the final phase. A completely terrific international match. Maybe even the best of his 79 (caps) so far and clearly the best on the [pitch].”
Spurs Web Opinion
Fair play, Hojbjerg was absolutely brilliant against England and he really did make Denmark tick in the middle of the park. When he’s in a system that really suits him, he is a top, top player.
