Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets announced that reliever Grant Hartwig had left knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Friday. He is expected to be out 6-8 weeks as he recovers. Hartwig had a 6.75 ERA in a small sample size with the Mets this season but was much better in Syracuse where he had a 2.31 ERA in 23 1/3 innings.

Hartwig has had stints with the Mets each of the past two seasons and is an important bullpen depth piece. His injury isn’t necessarily season-ending, but he won’t be available if the Mets need to reach into their bullpen depth in the coming weeks.

Latest Mets News

The Mets (36-38) defeated the Cubs (36-40) 11-1 on Friday. The offense ambushed Shota Imanaga who has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year for 10 runs in three-plus innings. Jose Quintana notched a quality start with 6 1/3 scoreless innings (one unearned run allowed), while Jose Iglesias went 4-for-5.

The Mets claimed outfielder Duke Ellis off waivers from the White Sox and optioned him to Double-A Binghamton, per Tim Healy of The Athletic. Ellis, 26, made his major league debut this year but has spent most of his time in Double-A. Between 41 games in Double-A and Triple-A, Ellis had a .626 OPS but 34 steals while being caught just twice. Ellis’ speed, obviously, is what makes him an attractive depth piece.

In the first game against his former team, Shohei Ohtani hit a 455-foot, two-run home run against the Angels. His blast broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning.
