YouTube Gold: Another Great Baseball Song
This time dedicated to the late great Willie Mays
Baseball songs are sort of a lost art. There was a time when you would see them pop up in the summer periodically and they would celebrate a great star. Not too long ago we linked to a great one about Jackie Robinson. We also linked to perhaps the last great baseball song, Talkin’ Baseball from the 1970’s.
Tonight we have another.
This week the great Willie Mays passed away. He was 93 and fewer and fewer people remember him as a player, but from all accounts, he was one of the absolute greats.
He was duly celebrates as such during his career with songs like “Say Hey (The Willie Mays Song) by the Treniers.
The Treniers never really hit it big but they were highly influential. They sort of fell between the classic R&B era from the 1940’s and early ‘50’s and the early rise of rock ‘n’ roll.
You hear elements of all of it in “Say Hey,” along with a brief cameo by Mays himself. It’s a classic of the genre.
