Iranian border force seize nearly 200 kg of drugs at Afghanistan border

An Iranian official announced the discovery of 198 Kilograms of drugs at the Taybad border post near the Afghanistan border.

Majid Shoja, the border commander of Khorasan Razavi in Iran, said on Friday, June 21, that drug traffickers intended to enter Iran through mountainous routes.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported that Iranian border forces launched an operation following reports of drug smuggling into Iran.

Majid Shoja, the border commander of Khorasan Razavi, said that in this operation, Iranian border forces seized 194 kilograms of methamphetamine and 4 kilograms of opium.

Khorasan Razavi shares approximately 302 kilometres of border with Afghanistan in the east.

The Iranian border guard has reported multiple drug seizures at the Afghanistan border over the past three years.

Eskandar Momeni, head of Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Headquarters, urged Roza Otunbayeva, the UN special representative for Afghanistan, to consider Afghanistan’s drugs as a serious threat during a meeting in May 2023.

Eskandar Momeni stated that there has been no decrease in the production, growth, and trafficking of Afghan drugs.

This comes amid the dire situation in Afghanistan, as the forced deportation of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan exacerbates the current crisis. Many deported refugees face harsh conditions upon return, with limited access to shelter, food, and healthcare.
