The United Nations Security Council reviewed the Secretary-General’s quarterly report on the current Afghanistan situation in a meeting held on Friday, June 21.

The report, covering the months of February, March, and April of this year, clearly indicates a significant increase in security incidents in Afghanistan. These incidents include those related to drugs, armed conflicts, ISIS attacks, and two airstrikes by Pakistan.

According to the report, a total of 2,500 security incidents were recorded in Afghanistan during February, March, and April of this year, representing a 55% increase compared to the previous three months. Among these, drug-related incidents saw the highest increase (97%).

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, reported that land disputes increased from 20 cases in the three months before the report to 51 cases in February, March, and April of this year, and armed conflicts rose from 75 cases to 106 cases.

The report also mentions a decrease in explosions in Afghanistan, with the majority of these explosions, according to UN documentation, being attributed to ISIS.

Roza Otunbayeva, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) head, also spoke at the UN Security Council meeting. She expressed concern about the deterioration of human rights in Afghanistan, citing the ban on women’s and girls’ education and work, and stated that the continuation of this situation would have disastrous consequences.

In her speech, she also referred to the third Doha meeting, scheduled for the end of this month. She emphasized the importance of the participation of representatives from the Taliban in this meeting. However, she mentioned that there will be no recognition of the Taliban until the issues of women’s rights and the constitution are addressed.
