06/23/2024 Strong to Severe Storms Expected Today

The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:

An active afternoon is anticipated as numerous thunderstorms will develop, some of which may be severe. Temperatures will push 90 again before the storms arrive. Behind today's storms, more tranquil weather is on tap for much of the week.

Through noon, there is no severe threat. After that, it will begin to increase. You will want to be weather-aware after noon, but the greatest potential to see severe weather appears to be from 3-8 PM Sunday.

All of the News10 viewing area is in at least a Level 2/5 Slight Risk, but the Storm Prediction Center has elevated areas east and northeast of Albany to a Level 3/5 Enhanced Risk - a relatively rare issuance for our area.

The biggest concern exists for scattered damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 MPH, and that will be the most common occurrence we see from these storms (other than torrential rain). That being said, the atmospheric dynamics in place support rotation, so we can't rule out a tornado or two - particularly to the east and northeast of Albany.

Storms look to be isolated shortly after lunchtime but look to pick up in coverage and intensity by late afternoon.

Guidance also suggest there could be several rounds of thunderstorms which could potentially turn severe, perhaps as many as three rounds of stronger storms. So, today: Just because you see one thunderstorm does not mean the severe threat is over!

Temperatures look to push 90 once again before the storms arrive in a good portion of the viewing area. Heat indices in the Hudson Valley south of Saratoga Springs could spike above 95 degrees when you factor in the humidity, with dew points near 70.

The severe threat diminishes after sunset, but it will remain mild and muggy to go along with a few showers and non-severe thunderstorms with low temps mainly in the 60s.

Mostly cloudy skies for Monday to go with a few showers and non-severe thunderstorms. There will also be a pretty good breeze out of the west-northwest as high temperatures struggle to make it back into the mid 70s.

Warmer conditions return Tuesday and Wednesday with highs mostly in the 80s. Wednesday will feature showers and storms, particularly later in the day.

Less humid weather carries us through the remainder of the forecast, with just the chance for some rain showers by next Saturday.
