Box office: ‘Inside Out 2’ wins second weekend and crosses $724 million worldwide

The success of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” seems to have given the box office a much-needed jumpstart this weekend, helping a number of smaller releases. Read on for the weekend box office report.

After achieving the second-largest opening for an animated film, Disney and Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” had a negligible second weekend drop to bring in an estimated $100 million this weekend. That’s down just 35% from its opening weekend, but more importantly, it brings its domestic total to a whopping $355.2 million after just ten days. That is, by far, the biggest success we’ve seen at the box office since last July’s “Barbie,” as it also surpassed the $282.1 million made by “Dune: Part Two,” to become the highest-grossing movie of the year.

“Inside Out 2” added another $164.4 million overseas this weekend to bring its global total to $724.4 million in two weeks. That also passes the global total for “Dune,” so that “Inside Out 2” is the biggest movie of the year worldwide, as well. Mexico has been killing it, with the animated movie grossing $63.9 million there alone, more than twice the $29 million the film has made in the UK and in South Korea.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence‘s buddy action comedy, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” continues to do well with another $18.8 million this weekend, down 43%, to bring its North American total to $146.9 million. With the 4th of July coming up in a few short weekends, there’s a good chance the “Bad Boys” sequel might match its predecessor’s $200 million domestic. With the $142.1 million from overseas markets, the “Bad Boys” sequel has racked up $289.1 million globally so far, more than 2003’s “Bad Boys II.”

The widest new release of the weekend was Jeff Nichols‘ period drama “The Bikeriders,” starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer, which Focus Features released into 2,641 theaters with a solid 81% on Rotten Tomatoes having been racked up in reviews since its festival debut in 2023. After making $4.1 million on Friday (including earlier previews), “The Bikeriders” brought in an estimated $10 million this weekend to open in third place. It scored moderately with audiences, going by its “B” CinemaScore.

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” ended up in a dead heat for fourth place with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” both estimated to make $3.6 million this weekend. For “Garfield,” that would be a 24% drop from last weekend to bring its domestic total to $85.1 million. For “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” that’s a 31% drop that would bring its North American total to $164.4 million.

John Krasinski‘s fantasy film, “IF” remained in sixth place with $2.8 million (down 23%) to bring its domestic total to $106.6 million. It added another $1.4 million overseas for a global total of $181.3 million.

Russell Crowe starred in the horror film, “The Exorcism,” released by Vertical into 2,240 theaters nationwide, where it grossed $2.4 million (averaging just over $1,000 per theater) to open in seventh place. It wasn’t received as well by audiences, having gotten an awful “D” grade on CinemaScore.

Oscar nominee June Squibb played the title character in Josh Margolin‘s action-comedy “Thelma,” which Magnolia Pictures gave a rare wide release into 1,280 theaters where it grossed $2.2 million, the second-biggest opening for the indie after “Woman Thou Art Loosed” in 2004.

Ishana Shyamalan‘s “The Watchers” dropped to ninth place with $1.9 million, down 46% from last weekend, to bring its domestic total to $17.8 million.

Trafalgar Releasing released the concert movie, “Ghost: Rite Here Right Now” on Thursday into 751 theaters, where it brought in $1.1 million, then the $1.5 million it added over the weekend allowed it to break into the bottom end of the top 10.

Oscar winner Emma Stone reunited with filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos for the triptych anthology film “Kinds of Kindness,” also starring Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, which Searchlight Studios platformed into five theaters in New York and L.A. In that limited release, it was able to bring in $350,000, averaging $70,000 per location, one of the best showings for a limited release this year so far. “Kinds” will expand into over 500 theaters nationwide next Friday for a play into the top 10.

Annie Baker‘s indie drama “Janet Planet” made $50,000 this weekend in two New York City theaters before it too expands across the country this coming Friday.

Exactly five players in the box office prediction game predicted that “Inside Out 2” would make more than $100 million in its second weekend, although we’ll have to wait for actual box office reporting, to know whether that sticks. Meanwhile, fourth and fifth place were fairly well split as far as predictions between a couple movies.

As expected, there were zero players with a perfect score in the June 14 game, although 13 players went four-for-six with “Gabriel_Savage” getting the most points, having been one of the few that picked “Inside Out 2” to open with more than $125 million. Board leader “MellowDrama” did as well, but he played his Super Bets more wisely to score 77,300 points.

On Friday, the sci-fi prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One” will open nationwide, as will a few other movies, so check back on Wednesday for a preview of the weekend.
