Nico Williams has impressed at Euro 2024

Williams has been considered a prodigious talent for some time and the winger is now starting to fulfil his potential, taking games by the scruff of the neck more regularly.

The 21-year-old scored eight goals and registered 19 assists across all competitions last season, playing a key role in helping Athletic Club get their hands on the Copa del Rey.

He signed a three-year contract extension last December with Athletic and was given a pay rise to reward his performances (The Athletic).

As many would have expected, the winger is now reported to be on the radar of many clubs, including Spurs, with various sources stating that the Lilywhites are considering activating his €50m (£42.8m) release clause (Telegraph).

However, Tottenham are not the only club thought to be keen on the Spanish international, with the likes of Arsenal (Football Transfers) and Barcelona (Sport) also credited with an interest in the player.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is known to be an admirer of the winger and is keen to bring him to the Nou Camp.

Nico Williams is happy at Athletic Club

Williams has now broken his silence on his future, making it clear that he remains happy at San Mames.

The Athletic Club academy graduate told La1 (as relayed by Fabrizio Romano): “I’ve just signed a new deal at Athletic a few weeks ago, I feel very good there. I’m very happy at Athletic. It’s very strange to receive questions on my future.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Teams might be prepared to activate Willams’ release clause but if the winger does not want to leave Athletic this summer, a transfer is not going to materialise.

By the sounds of it, the 21-year-old is planning on spending at least one more season with the Basque club before making a big move.

While Williams would be a brilliant signing for Tottenham this summer, it would be likely that he would want to move to a club that can guarantee him Champions League football.
