I regret the name I chose for my 5-year-old daughter – I wish I hadn’t tried to come up with something unique

Redditor One_potato_two shared the baby name in a post.

“I regret the name I chose for my daughter,” she wrote.

“My daughter is 5 and I named her Emberly, but I call her Emmy.

“At the time, I named her I thought it was really cool and unique because I got the name from a children’s book author I loved from my childhood (Ed Emberley).”

The parent explained that it wasn’t the name itself that she had qualms over, it was the fact that other kids had similar names.

“But now, there are so many kids nicknamed Emmy from other Em___ names,” she said.

“I really wish I had named her one of my favorite names rather than trying to come up with something unique.

“I wish I had named her Daisy or Sadie or Rosie. I wish I could change it, but it doesn’t really work that way.”

Viewers, however, attempted to reassure her that the name was still as unique as she’d hoped.

“I think it’s cool when someone with a common nickname has an unexpected full name,” said one commenter.

“Like Annie for Andromeda or Lizzie for Lizard (well, you get my point).”

Others urged her to not stress about the name as they felt it was a non-issue.

“Aren’t you doing the same you did before naming her? Worrying about what’s ‘unique’ rather than what you actually like,” said one commenter.

“Names are not SSN, it’s okay to share it with others and Emmy it’s not even a super common nickname so I doubt it’d ever be an issue to your daughter.

“Even if Emmy became super popular she still has an uncommon name that she could always start using.”

The Redditor explained that she felt like she’d made a mistake going against her initial instinct.

She urged mothers to go with their gut when picking names for their babies.

“I’m not really that concerned about the popularity of it,” she said.

“I just like other names more and wish I had gone with a name I love vs. something unique.

“I am mostly bringing this up as food for thought if anyone is thinking about baby names. Go with what you love!”
