Signs continue to point to Mitchell staying put.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have chosen their next head coach. The next thing on their summer to-do list is to procure a contract extension from Donovan Mitchell who is eligible to opt out of his current deal next summer.

According to The Athletic, Cleveland “is confident” that Mitchell will do so soon. The Cavs are prepared to offer him a $209 million extension. The fourth year of that deal is expected to be a player option.

This report is not surprising. The front office and even Dan Gilbert have expressed optimism over Mitchell extending with the Cavs for the last several month. That belief seems to only be increasing.

“I’ll say that my exit interview with him was really good in that he was talking about the future and how excited he was about the team, the organization,” Koby Altman said last month. “This is a player that has had two of the best years of his career here, has had a lot of success here, understands the infrastructure, I think has a lot of trust in what we’re doing and understands that our goal is to win a championship.”

Mitchell is eligible to sign his extension with the Cavs at any point now due to the NBA Finals ending. Things can change quickly in the NBA, but as it stands, it seems like Mitchell extending in Cleveland is a matter of when and not if.
