Schoharie CSD to offer universal free school meals

SCHOHARIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A local school district will provide no cost meals to all students for the next four years. The Schoharie Central School District will participate in a federal program that allows certain schools to offer breakfast and lunch to all students at no out-of-pocket cost.

It also eliminates unpaid school meal debt.

Supporters said it reduces the stigma around free meals and makes them easier to access by eliminating the application process.

New York is launching a new summer program that helps families cover the cost of groceries when school is out. Families in the program get $120 per school-aged kid for each month of the summer. The program begins July 1.
