Liverpool remain under no illusions over Leny Yoro’s ideal transfer destination this summer.

If all pans out in the Frenchman’s interests, he’ll be a Real Madrid player in the coming weeks.

That said, the Reds aren’t entirely down and out. James Pearce noted that Arne Slot’s outfit rates the 18-year-old highly and is lying in wait in case a deal with Los Blancos falls through.

“Liverpool target Leny Yoro informed Real Madrid that he wants to move to the Bernabeu. The 18-year-old French centre-back is happy with the personal terms on offer but a fee has yet to be agreed between the clubs as Lille hold out for around €60m,” the journalist reported for The Athletic.

“Senior Anfield figures have long since expected the European champions to win the race for his signature. Liverpool regard Yoro as a unique market opportunity given his age, talent, potential and contract situation (he only has one year left). They want to be at the front of the queue if the switch to Real falls through.”

The teenager’s current terms are set to expire in the following summer window, which explains Madrid’s reluctance to push a deal quickly over the line.

The Merseysiders, for what it’s worth, don’t currently view signing a centre-back as a necessity.

If Leny Yoro is difficult to sign, why not try for Calafiori?

We find it somewhat baffling that there has seemingly been greater focus on Yoro than his Italian counterpart, Riccardo Calafiori.

The Lille man is, of course, considered a potentially generational talent that half of Europe’s elite would no doubt love to see be a mainstay in their backline for the foreseeable future.

However, when the somewhat more experienced option of the Italian international is available in the same window – and there’s less of a clamour to sign him – what exactly are we waiting for?

There’s every chance he’ll set Liverpool back a similar amount of money and he ticks a broad number of boxes.
