As temperatures rise and windows are left open to welcome in fresh air, many households find themselves facing an invasion of pesky flies.
With flies being drawn to various sources of food, moisture, and organic matter, their presence can quickly become a nuisance, as well as a potential health hazard.
But luckily for you, there are a variety of natural solutions available to deter flies and keep them from infiltrating homes.
And fear not, you won’t have to go out and splash the cash on fancy cleaning products or traps, as a pest control expert has shared the simple trick he swears by – and it’ll cost you just 90p.
Not only this, but there’s an alcoholic drink that you may already have in your cupboard that will come in handy too.
Pest control pro Walter Murphy from PriceYourJob.co.uk recommended using cinnamon to banish flies.
Walter explained: “Cinnamon is touted as a natural method for keeping flies away.”
According to the pro, the potent aroma of cinnamon is said to repel flies, making it an effective deterrent.
Burning cinnamon candles or using cinnamon-infused air fresheners can also help to reduce fly numbers within the home.
But if you haven’t got any cinnamon in your cupboard and fancy giving this hack a try, you can nab it for as little as 90p from Asda.
Not only this, but Walter also suggested the effectiveness of essential oils, such as lemongrass or peppermint, to repel flies.
These oils emit strong fragrances that flies find unpleasant, effectively deterring them from entering the home.
As well as this, vodka has also been identified as a deterrent for house flies.
Walter added: “Flies cannot bear the smell of vodka.”
Keep pests out all summer
IF you want to ensure that your home is pest free this summer, here's what you need to know.
Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.
Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.
Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.
Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mozzies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.
So if you’ve got any vodka in your cupboard (and aren’t going to drink it_, you can place it in bags around your home, particularly in areas like the kitchen, which can help keep flies at bay.
As well as this, apple cider vinegar can also be used to trap flies.
You simply fill half a jar with apple cider vinegar and soap, to which flies will be attracted to the fermented apple scent and will become trapped in the solution.
The pest pro continued: “Once the flies are contained in the jar, they can be released outside.”

Why do flies come out in summer?
Flies are present all year round, but all of a sudden when summer comes, they are just EVERYWHERE!
The main contributing factors are the breeding cycle of flies and the soaring temperatures.
Insects are cold blooded and in summer, when their body temperature rises from the external heat, they become more active.
The hotter weather also let’s them seek out cool moist spots, like inside your home, to escape from the sweltering heat and to lay their eggs.
House Fly eggs take around 20 hours to hatch, but when the temperature rises above 37 degrees, can hatch within 8 hours!
In extreme hot weather the eggs can mature from larvae to adult fly in as little as four days.
The average lifespan of a housefly is 21 days, so each female can lay up to 900 eggs during the summer months!
