A busy few days for Keelboat racing at the Royal Cork

We have had another busy weekend for Keelboat racing at the RCYC. Thursday night was the third week of our seven-week June/July league. We had a great showing of 12 boats racing and in the Spinnaker division, Sean Hanley won Echo in “Luas” and Peter O’Leary brought home first place in IRC in “Archie”. In the White sail division Ian Hickey’s “Cavatina” was once again dominant in both Echo and IRC.

Friday night was the penultimate race in the Cork Harbour combined league and the third of seven races in the IHS June/July league. We had a lovely SW breeze, perfect conditions!. The Jones family’s “Jellybaby” reigned supreme in both Spin Echo and IRC by winning both, with “Morning After” winning in White sail Echo. Ronan Downing in “Miss Whiplash” began a series of wins for the weekend by bringing home first in IRC.

In IHS, the McSweeney’s came third in “Scribbler II”, Dan Murphy brought home 2nd place in “Anteex” and after much debate, the McJenkins family’s “Morning After” was rightfully awarded first place.

We had 19 boats out and this Friday will be the final night of the Cork Harbour Combined League, Let’s see everyone out and finish with a flourish!. There will be food and  prizegiving for the combined league (weekly and overall) in the Quays bar after racing.

On Saturday we had our annual midsummer madness. A heavy fog and rain greeted the 17 boats that took to the start, not exactly the midsummer conditions we were hoping for! Our RO Mike McCann offered us a great “Round the Island” course, with a finish at the RCYC marina. Unfortunately, even though the rain stopped and the fog lifted, the wind also died. We had seven finishers with the rest of the fleet retiring.  Ronan Downing took the hattrick, winning in IRC, ECHO and IHS. A special mention for perseverance goes to Brendan Egan on his classic, “Boekanier” who persisted to the end and almost crossed the finish line, before the ebbing tide took over and he slowly drifted back.

Thanks to all our competitors, winners, daily prize winners, RO’s Barry Rose, Peter Crowley and Mike McCann. Thanks to Mike and Sean Hanley for doing the results, not always the most straightforward task! Thanks as always to Amy, Anne and the staff.

See you on the water this week.
