Climate change solutions start with cool-headed talks | READER COMMENTARY

Early summer heatwave should be a launching point for exploring, calmly, how to address climate change.

Thank you for all the practical tips on how we can stay cool during this prolonged heat wave that is increasingly becoming more common due to global climate change (“Baltimore can be cool. Just not right now.” June 21). I appreciate you helping us take care of our health in the immediate situation — and asking us to keep our heads cool to address the longer-term issue of climate change.

We need to take deep breaths, open our minds and admit that we are all part of the problem. Then we must discuss how to transition to a new energy economy, be considerate of our energy use and be open-minded to new ideas on how to make this energy transition as fair and sustainable as humanly possible.

If you want to consider viable Maryland legislation, check out the Climate Crisis and Environmental Justice (CCEJ) Act by Climate Xchange and become part of coalition building with Wandra Ashley-Williams to create the political will to pass state legislation that integrates market forces to energy transition. If you want to be part of federal legislation needed for the national and global energy transition, join Citizens Climate Lobby/Education.

In our community, we must discuss our concern about climate change. We need to do this calmly, in a way that is non-tribal, because it is so vital for the future of humanity. Let’s start with cool-headed talks that lead to effective climate solutions.
