EMSA provides update to latest Medical Heat Alert
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — EMSA released an update that medics responded to four heat-related illness calls and transported three patients to local hospitals in the Oklahoma City area on Tuesday.
EMSA issued its second Medical Heat Alert of 2024 on Sunday for the Oklahoma City area. Since issuing the alert, EMSA medics have responded to 10 heat-related illness calls and transported seven patients to local hospitals.
This is a reminder that extreme heat during the summer months can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Remember to stay hydrated and to take breaks in the shade when outside for periods at a time.
Here are some tips to follow according to EMSA to stay protected during the summer heat:
- PRE-HYDRATION is key in preventing heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte replacement drinks several hours prior to and during long exposure to the summer heat.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat if working outdoors and take plenty of shade breaks.
- No alcohol or caffeine.
- If you do not have air conditioning, find a cooling station or public space (such as libraries or malls) during the day.
- Don’t limit your use of air conditioning.
- Use the buddy system if working outdoors and check on elderly neighbors.
- Keep a cell phone on you at all times when outdoors, including walking, running daily errands, yard work or sports and physical activity.
EMSA's Heat Alert will remain in effect until temperatures and/or heat related calls decrease considerably.
