YOU might think there is just one place for banana skins – in the bin.

But peel has many potential uses few people know about.

Cut down on waste and maybe save a little cash with these ideas . . .

WHITER TEETH: Banana peel is thought to be good for oral health.

While you shouldn’t stop brushing your gnashers as normal, you can try also rubbing the skin on both teeth and gums. Do this every day for a week and you could notice your pearly whites starting to brighten up, due to compounds in the peel.

REMOVE SKIN TAG: If you have a skin tag you’d like shot of, banana skin may do the trick.

Try placing a piece over the tag and hold it in place with a plaster or bandage.

This helps to dry the tag, which if treated nightly should fall off after a few weeks.

SPLINTER: Enzymes in the peel can help to draw out pesky splinters.

Just use a plaster to hold some over the splintered area for a few hours or overnight and the splinter should come to the surface.

GARDEN FOOD: Nutrients from the peel are great for fertilising flowers and plants. Chop into small pieces and bury in the soil.

CLEAN UP: Peel can also be handy for polishing leather shoes. Just rub it over your favourite footwear for a nice and shiny finish.

Similarly, the skin will get dull silver jewellery sparkling again.

Blitz into a paste and rub over your items then leave for about 30 minutes before washing off with a damp brush or cloth.

FLAVOUR: There is still tons of flavour in banana skin — which means you can eat it. One easy way is to chop and add to a sweet curry. Or try creating banana skin “bacon” by frying the peel on a high heat.

Then marinate with plenty of smoked paprika, maple syrup, brown sugar and soy sauce for about an hour before baking on high for ten minutes to create your tasty treat.
