House fire, downed powerlines and damaged homes in NW OKC after storms

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Storm damage extends through much of far north Oklahoma City and Edmond. The storms are also blamed for a massive house fire last night.

"It got in the roof and the attic space and quickly it became fully involved," said Capt. John Chenoweth with OKC Fire Department.

A single lightning strike, burning a home near Northwest 164th and May to the ground Tuesday night. Daylight reveals the damage.

"The thing about lightning strikes, it most of the time it starts in on the roof and in the attic, and it's one of the worst places it can caused Then it quickly spread throughout the house," said Chenoweth.

Fortunately, everyone got out safely, but the home is a total loss.

Almost everywhere you look in NW OKC and Edmond, you're bound to see something left by the storm.

Sorghum Mill, between Penn and Western, is closed off because power poles have been snapped and are littering the street.

"I believe That's why our power is out," said Crystal Punnuchamy. "It's just a nightmare."

Her family has been without power since midnight, so they're borrowing a generator.

"We seem to be getting a lot of this kind of weather out here," said Ponnuchamy.

She woke up to her fence blown over and scattered. She's already paid $2,500 to repair damage from a previous storm.

"And here we go again," she said.

They're also cleaning up inside of their home.

"We were getting so much water through our front door we soaked up four towels," said Ponnuchamy.

Near Waterloo and Penn, two people were shaken up after a 2x4 blew through their kitchen window.

"Glass everywhere, flooding in the kitchen," said Danielle Mann-Diangi."The house was shaking, it really sounded like a train was coming at us."

Closer to the metro, the off-ramp from Broadway Extension to Britton road is closed while crews repair a downed powerline.
