Carencro Police complete active-shooter training at high school

CARENCRO, La. (KLFY) – The Carencro Police Department participated in an active-shooter training at Carencro High school on Wednesday.

The training comes four months after a Carencro student was tragically shot and killed off-campus. Chief David Anderson says the training is not as result of the school bus shooting, but because Carencro Police undergo training annually.

Carencro High School doesn't have any students in the summer, making it an ideal time for law enforcement to conduct drills in a realistic setting. "We would like to use our local schools because that's where the officers will hopefully not have to respond. If so, we want to be ready," Chief Anderson stated.

The world has changed, and so have the types of crimes committed. The chief knows the world is full of unknowns, including what could happen in the days ahead. "20 years ago, active shooters weren't a thing, but today, they are, and we have to treat them as such. We will continue training for those unknown instances," the chief added.

Last week, the third suspect in the march school bus shooting death of an 18-year-old student was arrested. School Resource Officers (SRO) are also at the active shooter training. "Our School Superintendent Touchet takes this training and safety at these schools very seriously. We also take it very seriously here in Carencro and that's why we are going to continuously train every year," Chief Anderson explained.
