Wizards land UM’s Kyshawn George, picked 24th in NBA draft, in trade with Knicks

George is the first UM first-round pick since 2018.

Kyshawn George did not spend much time in a Miami Hurricanes uniform, but he showed NBA scouts enough for them to take him in the first round of this year’s draft.

The New York Knicks selected Kyshawn George with the 24th pick on Wednesday night, and they are trading him to the Washington Wizards, according to multiple reports. He is the first Miami player picked in the first round since the Spurs selected Lonnie Walker IV in 2018. George is the sixth first-round pick in UM history.

George, a Switzerland native, was a three-star prospect after playing in France. He arrived at Miami for his freshman year and was a role player to start, graduating into a starter. He played in 30 games, starting 16 this season.

George averaged 7.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Although he did not rack up dominant statistics in his freshman year, scouts saw enough promise in the 6-foot-8 guard’s game to justify a first-round pick.

“George is among the least productive one-and-done players in this draft (beside Bronny James) but should still go in the first round as a wing with size who made more than 40% of the 4.2 3-pointers he attempted this season,” CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish wrote in his mock draft. “If Cleveland is all-in on the present, perhaps there are better options. But George projects as the type of player who could develop into somebody who helps the Cavaliers someday get again where LeBron James used to regularly take them.”
