Memphis Depay usually wears a headband for the same reason as everyone else — to keep the sweat out of his eyes.
But the former Barcelona forward faced questions from the Dutch media when he wore one during the Netherlands pre-tournament friendly with Canada on June 6.
So in response to all the fuss he wore another headband when the Netherlands beat Poland 2-1 on June 16 in Euro 2024, but this time with a message for his detractors.
What is written on Memphis Depay’s headband?
The message on the headband was short but sweet: ‘WHO CARES’.
Depay had the headband specially made in response to questions he faced over why he wears one.
It appears to have been machine embroidered for the occasion.
What has Depay said about his headband?
When asked about why he chose to wear the headgear, Depay told the Dutch Press: “It keeps the sweat away from my head and is therefore functional.
“My girlfriend says she thinks it’s pretty, which is also important to me.”
According to EssentiallySports, he also defended the look prior to Euro 2024, saying: “The previous match I made twenty minutes for the press in the mixed zone. And I have had no questions about it.
“Who cares? Who cares? It looks great on me and helps me sweat. My girlfriend likes that sweatband. Amazing, right?
“It’s a new look and I feel good about it. I’m already thinking about what colour I’m going to wear in Germany.”
What has the Netherlands National Team manager Ronald Koeman said about the headband?
Reporters also tried interrogating Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman over the headband.
But the manager was having none of it none of it, claiming to be entirely unaware of the headgear.
Koeman stated: “I didn’t even see it at first. I only noticed the headband just before the game when we went outside. I’ll have to sleep on it for a night.”
