Afghan woman killed in Tehran with multiple stab wounds
Iranian media reported that the body of a woman discovered two days ago in a house in Tehran is that of an Afghan migrant.
According to Rokna News Agency, the 37-year-old woman, who lived alone, was found murdered with multiple stab wounds in her home.
The reports indicate that the victim’s friend visited her home in eastern Tehran after several days of not hearing from her. Upon receiving no response to their calls, they sought assistance from the police and firefighters, who entered the residence and discovered a bloodied corpse.
The murdered woman, identified as Nasrin, has been transferred to the forensic medical examiner’s office, but details regarding the identity of the perpetrator or the motive behind the killing have not been disclosed yet.
The victim’s friend informed the police that Nasrin had married twelve years ago but had separated from her husband last year due to their inability to have children, leading to marital discord.
Police in Tehran are currently pursuing further leads and seeking to apprehend the perpetrator.
This comes amid the dire situation of Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan, which has been exacerbated since August 2021 following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
In Iran, Afghan refugees face heightened challenges, including limited access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Many live in overcrowded and impoverished conditions, with reports of increased discrimination and xenophobia.
Pakistan hosts a large Afghan refugee population, worsened by the Afghan crisis, straining resources. Deportations by Pakistani authorities, despite global concerns, add to refugees’ challenges. International aid is crucial amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis and insecurity in Afghanistan.
