Tractor-trailer rollover crash on I-95 leads to multiple collisions including fire truck at the scene

A tractor-trailer rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Greenwich lead to a chain of collisions and multiple injuries overnight on Thursday, state police said.

A double tractor-trailer was traveling on I-95 South near the Exit 4 ramp in Greenwich during wet conditions just after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday when its rearmost trailer began to swerve to the right, according to Connecticut State Police.

At that point, the tractor-trailer veered to the right, struck the right shoulder metal beam guardrail and a light support, then rolled over and landed on its passenger side, state police said.

The driver, a 40-year-old Springfield, Massachusetts man, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Greenwich Hospital for treatment. He  was found at fault for the collision and was issued a citation for failure to maintain proper lane and traveling too fast for conditions, according to state police.

Around 1:06 a.m. Thursday, troopers from Troop G in Bridgeport, as well as additional emergency vehicles, were still at the scene of the crash when a car carrier truck traveling southbound on I-95 approached the area and struck a stationary Greenwich Fire Department truck parked in the right and center travel lanes, which had been shut down for the investigation, state police said.

As a result of the collision, three firefighters and the driver of the car carrier truck, a 33-year-old man from New Haven, were transported to Stamford Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to state police.

Following the initial impact with the fire truck, the car carrier truck struck a Lexus R35 and Honda Pilot. The Lexus driver, a 71-year-old man from Flushing, New York, reported minor injuries and was transported to Stamford Hospital, state police said.

The Honda driver, a 48-year-old man from Port Chester, New York, did not report any injuries at the time of the crash, according to state police.

The collisions shut down I-95 South for around six hours due to the car carrier truck’s fuel tanks being breached and leaking around 130 gallons of fuel, state police said. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Connecticut Department of Transportation, Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Fire Department and Greenwich EMS all responded to the scene.

The car carrier truck driver was deemed at fault for the crash and charged with failure to display plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, failure to maintain minimum insurance, failure to move over or slow down for an emergency vehicle and traveling to fast for conditions, according to state police.

The crashes remain under investigation, state police said.
