Man United assistant manager set to leave this summer amid reshuffle - report

Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy will leave the club at the end of this month when his two-year contract expires, according to The Athletic.

The 46-year-old South African joined the Red Devils in 2022 alongside manager Erik ten Hag following the Dutchman’s arrival from Ajax.

McCarthy transitioned into management after hanging up his boots following a storied career that saw him play for Ajax, Celta Vigo, FC Porto, and Blackburn Rovers.

He previously led Cape Town City and AmaZulu, where he earned the South African Premier League Coach of the Season award in 2020/21.

The lifelong Man United fan wants to return to management and will leave to pursue his ambitions.

His stint at Old Trafford yielded mixed reactions, but he reportedly fostered positive relationships with many players and was always enthusiastic about the experience.

His first year saw him receive praise for his role in Marcus Rashford’s resurgence. After managing only a handful of goals in the 2021/22 season, the England international delivered 30 goals under McCarthy.

However, the second season brought criticism as United’s goalscoring dropped significantly. United managed only 57 goals in 38 Premier League games.

Despite the mixed bag, McCarthy played a part in United securing two pieces of silverware in two years. He departs with the club’s respect and gratitude.

Man United are looking to replace both McCarthy and Eric Ramsay, who left in February to join Minnesota United.

The Red Devils are in advanced talks to bring former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman and former PSV Eindhoven boss has rejected the Burnley job to join Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

United are also set to hire head coach of Go Ahead Eagles Rene Hake to bolster the backroom staff ahead of the 2024/25 season. Go Ahead Eagles finished ninth in the Eredivisie last term, eight points behind Ajax.
